Do 13.04. Politbeisl: Rising Seas, Rising Far Right – On Fascist Fantasies in Times of Climate Crisis

What do we make of the simultaneous rise of the far-right politics and the sea level? Surely it is not coincidental that the movements that wish to stop the cascade of climate emergencies have to face at the same time a resurgence in fascist tendencies worldwide. To understand this conjuncture we have to look deeper than abstractly political or ideological analyses allow us.

We will venture with the help of the writings of The Zetkin Collective, Andreas Malm and primarily Klaus Theweleit into the past fascist imaginaries, fears and desires, in order to uncover their dispersed actuality in the present moment, especially in reactions to the ecological situation, migration, women and LGBTQ movements. We are also going to pay attention to the ‘lone-wolf terrorists’ and ‘eco-fascists’ that we have heard about in recent years. Finally, we will ask what alternative does Theweleit’s proposals leave us with? What lessons for the green movements, antifascism, non-fascist use of bodies, fantasies and language can we gather from the results of his research and our case studies?
